Incumbent 6th District Councilmember Dee Andrews has avoided a June runoff after a recount today of about 140 ballots known as “under votes” revealed he has passed the 50% plus one threshold. Andrews, who ran as a write-in candidate due to the city’s term limits law, will continue representing the district for another four years.

The announcement by Andrews’ campaign staff means that only the 2nd City Council District has a runoff in June, where Jeannine Pearce faces Eric Gray. Pearce received nearly 400 more votes than Gray in the primary, 2,043 to 1,647. The third-place finisher was Joen Garnica, who received 876 votes.

The Andrews announcement may actually help Gray with fundraising. Many of the people who backed Andrews financially in the primary are expected to also support Gray, a small business owner, against Pearce, a labor advocate.

How important is the 2nd District race? During the primary, the L.A. County Federation of Labor spent $42,885.42 in independent expenditures in support of Pearce.
