Samantha Mehlinger Promoted To Editor Of The Business Journal

Publisher George Economides announced today that Samantha Mehlinger has been promoted to editor of the Long Beach Business Journal, effective Thursday, February 1. She is now responsible for determining the editorial content of each edition as well as for the Business Journal’s website and social media platforms. City Council To Consider Downtown Noise Study And Homeownership Pathways

The agenda for the February 6 Long Beach City Council meeting is now online. The council will discuss whether to proceed with studies on noise generated by outdoor events in downtown and methods to increase pathways to homeownership for low and moderate-income individuals. Mayor Garcia To Introduce New Early Education Program

Mayor Robert Garcia is presenting an update on the first-year accomplishments of The Mayor’s Fund for Education on February 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Queen’s Salon on the Queen Mary, 1126 Queens Hwy. He plans to introduce a new program, “Ready Rosie,” to advance early childhood education.

 

O’Donnell Introduces New Education Bill

Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell introduced the Pathways to College Act (Assembly Bill 1951) to the state legislature today. The bill would allow school districts to administer a college entrance exam such as the SAT or ACT during the school day at no cost to the student. Many educators and school board members support the proposal, according to a press release.

 

NAFTA Negotiations Continue

The sixth round of negotiations on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) concluded yesterday in Montreal, with progress being made specifically on corruption, according to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for late February in Mexico. The California Chamber of Commerce supports U.S. efforts during the negotiations. Click here for more information.

 

Registration Opens For 5K Run Around Grand Prix Track

Registration is open for the inaugural Grand Prix 5K Run/Walk, in which participants race on the Grand Prix circuit on April 8 at 8 a.m. The early bird entry fee is $30 per person until March 1.
