Commercial Satellite Developer Purchases Virgin Orbit Launch
Denmark-based commercial satellite developer GomSpace has purchased a launch for several of its nanosatellites onboard a Virgin Orbit LauncherOne rocket, which is manufactured at its Long Beach headquarters. The launch is scheduled to take place in early 2019. GomSpace aims to add to its collection of satellites, which help direct air-traffic controllers and shipping companies, as well as pinpoint the location of missing planes and ships. Virgin Orbit manufactures its LauncherOne rocket at its Long Beach headquarters.
Out-Patient Clinic Development Announced For Downtown
Commercial real estate developer Meridian announced its $2.45 million purchase of five parcels at 1078-1090 Atlantic Blvd. totaling 29,000 square feet adjacent to Dignity Health’s St. Mary’s Medical Center. Demolition of existing structures is scheduled to begin this month to make way for a $3.1 million, 9,200-square-foot ambulatory, out-patient clinic. The project is slated for completion by the end of the year.
New Tax Withholding Tables Released
Due to recently passed tax reform legislation, the IRS has released its new tax withholding tables for employee paychecks. Employers must implement the new tables by February 15. Click here for more information.
Health Care Provider Associations Condemn Anthem Practices
The American Academy of Emergency Physicians and 10 other national health care provider associations have sent a letter to Anthem, Inc., to address concerns over some of the insurance provider’s practices, including denying coverage of advanced imaging performed in outpatient settings. Long Beach Transit Community Meetings To Discuss Improving Rider Experience
Long Beach Transit is hosting a series of community meetings on possible changes to its transit systems based on feedback from a recent survey. Route efficiency, service amenities and on-time performance were some of the factors taken into consideration. The meeting times and locations are as follows:
– Today, January 16: 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Signal Hill Youth Center, 1780 E. Hill St.
– January 17: 6:30-8:30 p.m., El Dorado Senior Center, 2800 N. Studebaker Rd.
– January 20: 10 a.m. to noon, Silverado Park Community Center, 1545 W. 31st St.
– January 27: 10 a.m. to noon, Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, 5870 Atlantic

CORRECTION – In the new edition of the Business Journal, the Publisher’s Perspective on the upcoming Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees race between incumbent Jeff Kellogg and challenger Uduak-Joe Ntuk indicated that the Long Beach Police Officers Association (POA) opposed Kellogg. That is incorrect. POA President Jim Foster sent the following statement today to the LBBJ: “Our Board decided months ago to stay out of the LBCC Trustee’s race. We have not endorsed anyone, and we have not spent any money to support any candidate. We have not targeted Jeff Kellogg in any fashion, nor do we have any intention to do so.” We regret the mistake.
