Retaliatory Tariffs Could Affect $5.6 Billion In California Exports

A United States Chamber of Commerce analysis of the impacts of tariffs instituted by foreign countries in retaliation for tariffs enacted by the Trump administration found that about $5.6 billion in California exports are threatened. The auto industry faces the greatest potential financial impact, with nearly $4 billion in vehicle exports to China affected. The chamber also analyzed tariffs instituted by the European Union, Canada and Mexico. According to the chamber, 4,869,200 California jobs are supported by global trade.

 

San Pedro Bay Ports To Require Cleaner Truck Standards

Final approval on a new trucking regulation at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles is expected in July. Both of the ports’ harbor commissioners have given initial approval on the policy, which would require that new trucks registering for service at the ports to be model year 2014 or newer in order to meet the cleanest engine standards. The policy is being adopted as part of the updated Clean Air Action Plan. The measure takes effect October 1 and only applies to trucks that are not currently registered in the Ports Drayage Truck Registry.

 

Harassment Victim Protection Bill Passed By State Legislature

California Assembly Bill (AB) 2770, which is related to communications between an employer and employee, unanimously passed the legislature and has been sent to Gov. Jerry Brown for his signature. Under existing law, certain communications are considered privileged and therefore protected from civil action related to libel or slander. AB 2770 adds complaints of sexual harassment made to an employer by an employee to the list of privileged communications, as long as accusations are based on credible evidence. The bill was sponsored by the California Chamber of Commerce as a “job creator” bill.

 

Long Beach City College Foundation Receives $1 Million Gift For College Promise

The Long Beach City College (LBCC) Foundation recently received a gift of real estate valued at $1 million, one of the largest donations in its history. The gift from a local couple will support scholarships for the Long Beach College Promise, which provides a free year of tuition at the college to Long Beach Unified School District graduates who meet certain requirements. The couple are alumni of both LBCC and California State University, Long Beach.

 

Frontier Communications Promotes Javier Mendoza

Frontier Communications has promoted Javier Mendoza to the position of vice president, corporate communications and external affairs. In this role, he is responsible for external corporate communications, issues management and engagement with stakeholders. Mendoza has served as director of public relations for Frontier’s West Region since 2016. Prior to that, he was senior communications manager for Sempra Energy’s SoCalGas business unit. He has also held positions with Molina Healthcare, United Healthcare, The Boeing Company and Universal Studios.

 

City of Signal Hill Announces Launch Of New Website

The City of Signal Hill is launching its revamped website, which includes improved navigation as well as updated content and layout. The city has also updated its Go Signal Hill mobile app to match the new site. In addition, the city plans to launch an e-newsletter later this summer and continue to improve its quarterly City Views newsletter.
