Large Number Of Ballots Remain To Be Counted
Nearly 14,000 Long Beach ballots associated with the June 5 election remain to be counted, according to data provided by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. Countywide, more than 500,000 ballots have not been counted.
Here is the breakdown of the estimated number of uncounted ballots for Long Beach:
Citywide: 6,349 provisional ballots plus 7,625 absentee ballots for a total of 13,974 uncounted ballots.
5th Council District: 992 provisional and 1,460 absentee, for a total of 2,452.
7th Council District: 882 provisional and 1,076 absentee, for a total of 1,958.
Long Beach Unified 3rd District: 1,205 provisional and 1,065 absentee for a total of 2,270.
While the Long Beach election results are unlikely to change, there is a small chance for a surprise. For example, in the 5th Council District, challenger Rich Dines would need 64% of the 2,452 remaining ballots to overtake Councilmember Stacy Mungo’s lead. It’s a bit tighter in the 7th District, where challenger Jared Milrad would require just under 60% of the remaining 1,958 ballots to pass Councilmember Roberto Uranga. For the school board race, second-place finisher Cesar Armendariz would need nearly 75% of the uncounted votes to get past Juan Benitez.
The Measure M outcome is more interesting due to the large number of uncounted citywide ballots. With a 2,326-vote lead – 20,684 votes in favor to 18,258 votes against – those voting “no” would need around 60% of the remaining 13,974 ballots for the measure to be defeated. If a majority of the uncounted ballots are from the more conservative areas of the city, the results could flip.
L.A. Harbor Commission Approves $1.3 Billion Port Budget
The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners approved a $1.3 billion budget for the Port of Los Angeles’s upcoming fiscal year 2018-2019. Operating revenues are estimated at $509.5 million, a 7.2% increase from the prior fiscal year, due to expected cargo volume growth and increases in shipping services revenues and land rental returns, according to a statement from the port. Operating expenses are estimated at $280.2 million. Budget priorities include $91 million for capital improvement projects, $10 million for rail and roadway improvements and $4.7 million for security projects. The budget plan is expected to create 1,900 direct and indirect jobs beyond the harbor department.
Toyota Terminal Renovation Study Released, Open For Public Comment
A draft study examining a proposal by Toyota Logistics Services to revamp its operations at Pier B was released today by the Port of Long Beach. The proposed project would reconfigure the company’s Pier B facility, including the construction of a renewable fuel-cell power plant and hydrogen fueling station. The report concludes that “no substantial evidence was found that the project would have a significant effect on the environment.” Public comment on the project may be made to ceqa@polb.com through July 10.
Saturday Memorial Service Planned For Former Gov. George Deukmejian
A memorial service for former California Governor and Long Beach resident George Deukmejian will take place this Saturday, June 9, at 1 p.m., at the Terrace Theater, 300 E. Ocean Blvd. and will be open to the public. A reception will follow from 3-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donate to the YMCA Model Legislature George Deukmejian Endowment at the California Science Center, the Ararat Home of Los Angeles or disabled student services at California State University, Long Beach.
