LAEDC Forecasts Economic Growth For U.S., Los Angeles County

The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) is forecasting steady growth for the U.S. economy over the next two years, projecting that gross domestic product will increase by 2.3% in 2018 and 2.1% in 2019. The nonprofit’s Economic Forecast & Industry Outlook, released today, also projects that unemployment will drop to 3.9% in 2019. The report also stated that nearly all of Los Angeles County’s industry sectors added jobs in 2017, and that they should continue adding jobs through 2019.

 

New Partnership Will Lead To Cleaner Trucking At Ports

The Harbor Trucking Association today announced a partnership with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. to provide clean fuels to the association’s more than 100 members, which operate more than 8,000 trucks at West Coast ports. In addition, Clean Energy will host workshops on the latest programs in clean technology and assist companies in grant writing for lower-emission, upgraded equipment. The partnership is meant to aid efforts to meet the more stringent standards of the latest version of the Clean Air Action Plan recently adopted by the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

 

CSULB Among Top 100 Best-Value Public Universities

Kiplinger has named California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) one of the top 100 public colleges and universities on its 2018 list of best-value public institutions of higher education. Kiplinger produces the longest running newsletter in the U.S. and provides finance advice and business forecasts. CSULB came in at No. 70 on the list. “Our rankings, which weigh affordability alongside academic quality, are a great resource for students and their parents when sorting through college choices,” Mark Solheim, editor of Kiplinger’s magazine, stated. “We start with a universe of nearly 1,200 schools. We then rank [them] based on cost and financial aid data.”

 

Wells Fargo Donated More Than $286.5 Million In 2017

Today, Wells Fargo announced it donated in excess of $286.5 million last year to more than 14,500 nonprofits nationwide. Also, employees volunteered two million hours valued at $48 million, a record for the company. Wells Fargo reaffirmed its pledge of a 40% increase in its philanthropic efforts in 2018, with a target of $400 million. Beginning in 2019, the company has a goal to invest 2% of its after-tax profits in corporate philanthropy.

 

Increased Military Flight Training May Affect Parts Of Long Beach

The Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos plans to increase flight activity, which includes training exercises and nighttime helicopter flights, from February 21 to March 1. The actions may affect parts of Long Beach. Efforts will be made to mitigate the inconvenience to surrounding neighborhoods.

 

CSULB President To Address Second Samoan Church On Super Sunday

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) President Jane Close Conoley is slated to speak about the importance of attending college on February 25, at the 10 a.m. service at Second Samoan Church, 655 Cedar Ave. This is part of the “Super Sunday” initiative of the California State University system to encourage youth from African-American churches to obtain a college education. Other CSULB leaders are scheduled to speak at different church services in Long Beach that day.
