Bill Extending Alcohol Sales To 4 a.m. Advances To Assembly Floor

According to the California Alcohol Policy Alliance, an organization that bills itself as an “alcohol industry watchdog,” the California Senate Committee on Appropriations voted today to forward Senate Bill 905 to the assembly floor for a vote. The bill, co-authored by State Senator Ricardo Lara, would enable certain cities, including Long Beach, to establish pilot programs allowing alcohol sales until 4 a.m. Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia has expressed support for this concept within certain areas of Long Beach, while Long Beach Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell has publicly voiced opposition. A representative in the committee office could not provide confirmation of the vote because the meeting is ongoing. Results will be posted here when the meeting adjourns.

 

Boeing To Expand Satellite Capabilities With Acquisition

Boeing is entering into an agreement to acquire El Segundo-based satellite manufacturer Millennium Space Systems. Once the acquisition is finalized in the third quarter of this year, Millennium Space Systems will become a Boeing subsidiary, expanding the global firm’s satellite capabilities. Millennium has approximately 260 employees. “Millennium Space Systems’ expertise in vertically-integrated small-satellite solutions perfectly complements Boeing’s existing satellite portfolio, and will allow us to meet the needs of a diverse customer set,” Boeing Defense, Space & Security President and CEO Leanne Caret stated.

 

Los Angeles County Housing Prices Increase

Los Angeles County home prices increased 2% in July compared to the month prior, the California Association of Realtors® (CAR) announced today. Compared to July 2017, the median price of homes in the county increased by 5.5%. Meanwhile, the statewide median home price decreased 7.6% in July compared to the same month in 2017. Both in L.A. County and statewide, the number of sales transactions decreased in July. The CAR report stated that higher interest rates and rising home prices have “eroded housing affordability and dampened demand” for the state as a whole.

Downtown Long Beach Alliance Seeks Proposals For Wayfinding Signs

The Downtown Long Beach Alliance has issued a request for proposals for the production and installation of 12 pedestrian wayfinding signs in the downtown area. The 6.5-foot signs are intended to enhance the experience of navigating downtown by providing maps with estimated walking times to popular destinations.
