Initiative To Recall Councilmember Pearce Fails
The petition to initiate a recall election to remove 2nd District Councilmember Jeannine Pearce from office was deemed insufficient today by Long Beach City Clerk Monique De La Garza. While 9,050 signatures were collected by the recall initiative’s backers, 4,235 were found to be insufficient. To force a recall, 6,363 valid signatures by registered voters residing in the 2nd District would have been necessary. Most of the invalid signatures were deemed insufficient because they were made by people who were not registered to vote or who resided outside of the district.
CalChamber Removes Health Care-Related Bill From Job Killer List
The California Chamber of Commerce removed Assembly Bill (AB) 2384 from its job killer list after amendments were made on June 14. As amended, the bill would require health plans to include certain “medication-assisted treatment and overdose reversal prescription drugs approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for opioid use disorder.” Prior to the amendments, the CalChamber claimed the bill would have eliminated consumer protections and increased premiums. AB 2384 is scheduled for a hearing before the Senate Health Committee on June 27.
DLBA Seeks Proposals For City’s Newest Loan Program
The Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DLBA), serving as a Kiva City Long Beach loan program trustee, is seeking submissions by entrepreneurs who may not be able to receive funding through traditional banking institutions. The DLBA is looking for businesses located within the Downtown Parking Improvement Area to participate in the loan program. Online applications completed by the first of each month will be considered at the following DLBA Economic Development Committee meeting, during which applicants will give a three-minute presentation on their concept. Long Beach City College To Offer Construction Employment Training Program
Long Beach City College is accepting participants for a free, eight-week construction apprenticeship readiness program starting July 9, and ending August 30. Sessions run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The curriculum includes carpentry, cement masonry, green technologies, plumbing, surveying, weatherization and heating, and ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). Click here for more information.
