Marijuana Ordinance Going To City Council
The Long Beach City Council is considering an ordinance to allow the production and sale of adult-use cannabis within the city during its June 19 meeting. Some features of the proposed ordinance include requiring dispensaries to hold both a medical and an adult-use license, maintaining cannabis business buffer zones, requiring businesses to obtain health permits prior to submitting an application, and requiring managers and employees of dispensaries to attend a Responsible Cannabis Vendor Program. City of Long Beach Receives $300,000 Grant For New Workforce Program
The Wells Fargo Foundation awarded the Pacific Gateway Workforce Partnership with its $300,000 2018 CommunityWINS grant during the 86th Annual U.S. Conference of Mayors, which ran from June 8-11 in Boston. Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia accepted the award on Pacific Gateway’s behalf. The organization received the grant for its Citywide Market for Hourly Labor program, a marketplace for hourly labor built around “protections, progress, individual control and alignment with employers’ needs,” according to a press release.
NAACP Honors Local Men And Fathers
The Long Beach Branch NAACP honored its 2018 Outstanding Men and Fathers on Sunday, June 10. Honorees were recognized for the vital role they play in society by shaping the personalities of current and future leaders, according to the organization. Recognized local men and fathers included: Dr. Robert Nagourney, Dr. Forouzan Golshani, Frank Colonna, Judge Kelvin Filer, Judge John Lawson, Robin Perry Esq., Dr. J.T Minor, Derrick Mims, Damon Cagnolatti, Ron Nelson, Steve Neal, Greg Keebler, Monte Beard, Sr., Alvin Hayes, John Malveaux, David Zaid, Christopher Miller, Wayne Chaney Sr., and Chuckie Miller.
Foundation For The Long Beach Symphony Names First Executive Director
The Foundation for the Long Beach Symphony has named Genevieve Macias to serve as its first executive director. Macias has served as the director of development and communications for the Long Beach Symphony since 2013, and will now lead the nonprofit corporation that serves as the organization’s endowment fund. The foundation was created in 1986 and has since been overseen by a board of directors. Macias’s goal is to triple the endowment fund over the next few years.
Arts Council For Long Beach Appoints New Director Of Programs
The Arts Council for Long Beach announced the appointment of Lisa Desmidt as its new director of programs. Her responsibilities include overseeing the grants, marketing and arts education programs, as well as managing the organization’s website. Desmidt has served as the arts council’s grants and marketing manager for three years.
