Hospitality Alliance Claims Labor Group Is Misleading Petition Signers

The Long Beach Hospitality Alliance, an arm of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce that represents local hotels, is calling for signatures collected in support of a hotel workforce-related ballot initiative to be invalidated. A statement from the alliance contended that signature collectors, who the alliance claimed to be affiliated with the union Unite Here, have been using false statements to gather signatures to place an initiative on the November ballot. If passed by voters, it would create safety provisions and workload restrictions for hotel workers. The alliance provided a photo (at right) of a signature collector with a sign that read “80% of hotel maids in Long Beach have been assaulted.” According to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), there were two reports made to LBPD related to assaults on hotel workers from August 2016 to September 2017: a sexual battery and a battery against a security guard.
