Trump Administration Moves Ahead With Tariffs

The Trump administration announced today that it would go ahead with plans to impose a 25% tariff on $50 billion worth of goods imported from China. A list of affected imports will be released by June 15. Additionally, “specific investment restrictions and enhanced export controls for Chinese persons and entities related to the acquisition of industrially significant technology” will be released by June 30, according to a White House statement. In April, the Chinese government announced that it would retaliate with 25% tariffs on American imports if the White House went ahead with the plan.

 

Report Reveals Low Female Representation At U.S. Law Firms

According to Law360’s 2018 Glass Ceiling Report, female representation lags at all levels of U.S. law firms, even though women have made up 40% of law school students over the past three decades. The study found that 36% of all attorneys are women, and just over 23% of law firm partners are female. Although women of color made up nearly one-fifth of first-year law students in 2017, they represent only 8% of private practice attorneys and 3% of law firm partners. Nearly one-third of the female respondents reported having faced sexual harassment, and one half said they have experienced gender discrimination.

 

Tonight’s Harbor Commission Meeting Rescheduled

Tonight’s meeting of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has been canceled. A special meeting is being held on Thursday, May 31, to review items that had been scheduled for tonight, including an annual report on the port’s small business and very small business enterprise program, and extending programs that incentivize shippers to reduce air emissions in the port complex. 6 p.m., Port of Long Beach Interim Offices, 4801 Airport Plaza Dr.

 

CSULB To Host Free Entrepreneur Boot Camp

The California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), College of Business Administration and the Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship are hosting the 2nd Annual Beach Entrepreneur Boot Camp on Tuesday nights from July 10 to August 14. New Senior Center Opening

The Salvation Army Long Beach Corps is celebrating the grand opening of the Al & Faye Taylor Senior Center at 3000 Long Beach Blvd. tomorrow. The grand opening event includes a free public fair that will offer services such as health checks and resources, as well as food, live music, games and prizes, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
