Container Dwell Times Continue To Improve At Local Ports

Container dwell times – the number of days cargo containers sit on a terminal after being offloaded from a ship – improved at the San Pedro Bay ports in March, according to the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association. In March, the average container dwell time was 2.51 days compared with 2.63 days in February. Dwell times also declined in January and February despite increasing cargo volumes. The Port of Los Angeles experienced a 27% decrease in cargo volumes in March compared to the same month in 2017. The Port of Long Beach experienced a 13.8% increase in cargo volumes in March compared to the same month last year, and also just closed out its best first quarter ever. Forbes Names CSULB A ‘Best Value’ College

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) was ranked No. 53 out of the 300 schools named in Forbes’ third annual America’s Best Value Colleges list. The selection recognized schools that provide the best return on investment. CSULB was also ranked 26th among public universities. Forbes measured schools based on net price, net debt, alumni earnings, timely graduation, quality and access for low-income students. Sixteen other California State University schools made the list as well.

 

CSULB Receives More Than $1 Million In Gifts

California State University, Long Beach received more than $1.1 million in donations through its inaugural Giving Day on March 15. While donors could contribute to any campus cause, four categories were highlighted: basic needs, the Beach Fund, scholarships and study abroad programs. According to Andrea Taylor, vice president for university relations and development, the school receives less than 28% of its funding from the state, so fundraising efforts are important.

 

DLBA Extends Board Of Directors Application Deadline

The Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DLBA) extended the application deadline to apply to its board of directors until May 7. Downtown residents, commercial property owners and business owners are eligible to apply for a two-year term on the board. Five positions are available. The DLBA Governance Committee will review submissions and interview candidates by May 23, with board elections taking place in mid-June. Click here to apply.

 

APS Stevedoring Appoints New Manager Of Sales And Marketing

Long Beach-based APS Stevedoring recently appointed Nick Mori as its manager of sales and marketing. Mori is responsible for customer service, rate negotiations, company promotion and acquiring new business. He most recently worked for Mitsui OSK Lines’ car carrier vessel division overseeing operations, customer service and sales. APS is the largest 100% family-owned stevedoring company in the United States, according to a statement from the firm.

 

 

Rancho Los Alamitos Welcomes New Historic Site Curator

Angela Scott has joined Rancho Los Alamitos as the new historic site curator. She is responsible for managing the historic resources and curatorial staff. Her previous experience includes positions at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. She holds a bachelor of arts in anthropology/archaeology from University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree in American studies.
