All 29 ‘Job-Killer’ Bills Have Been Stopped
With the vetoing of Assembly Bill 3080 by Gov. Jerry Brown, all 29 “job-killer” bills identified by the California Chamber of Commerce have been defeated, the chamber announced today. “We know many of these job-killing proposals will return next session, but legislators need to understand that California employers have reached their limit with respect to new laws and regulations that increase costs through threat of litigation and additional burdens that stop them from making future investments in our state’s economy,” Chamber President and CEO Allan Zaremberg stated in the announcement. Job killers that did not make the cut this year include bills that would have altered paid leave regulations for hotel workers, increased health care premiums, increased costs and environmental litigation, and more. Job-killer bills are those the chamber believes would have negative impacts on businesses operating in California.
New Cancer-Related Technology Available In Long Beach
Earlier this week, MemorialCare announced a new cancer treatment offered at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center – AlignRT. The treatment protects patients’ hearts from cancer-fighting radiation therapy. The system uses 3-D imaging to provide additional accuracy to ensure breast cancer radiation treatments are more precise, thereby protecting the heart and surrounding tissue from radiation exposure. Utilizing three cameras to monitor the patient, AlignRT detects any movement during radiation therapy. If a patient moves, the radiation beam is automatically turned off.
Construction Employment Continues To Increase Nationwide
Construction employment increased by 23,000 jobs in September, according to a government data analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America. Year to date, construction jobs have increased by 315,000. The industry’s unemployment rate is down to 4.1%, causing hourly pay to increase to an average of more than $30 per hour. Construction employment totaled nearly 7.29 million, the highest level since May 2008 and a 4.5% increase from September 2017.
Community Forum On New Vote By Mail Ballots
Long Beach City Clerk Monique De La Garza and the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk are hosting a community forum on Tuesday, October 16, to inform voters about the county’s new vote by mail ballots for the upcoming November 6 general election. The Voting Solutions for All People initiative will also be discussed during the forum, which is being held in Long Beach City Council chambers at 5 p.m. “Our priority is to help Long Beach voters make their voices heard,” De La Garza stated. Historic Mural Relocation Project Has Begun
Workers have begun removing a mural from the former Port of Long Beach headquarters on Pier A East. The nonprofit Long Beach Heritage is funding the project to reinstall and preserve the mural elsewhere. The theme of the 74-foot ceramic tile mural by Sheridan Stanton and Paul Souza is the chronological development of the harbor. The completed building, along with the mural, were unveiled in 1960.
