Southwest To Temporarily Offer More Flights
Southwest Airlines announced today that from September 5 to October 31 it will add two weekday nonstop flights to Sacramento and three weekday nonstop flights to Las Vegas out of Long Beach Airport. The flight slots are currently allocated to JetBlue, which previously notified airport staff that they would be not be utilized. Southwest requested use of the slots, which were then temporarily allocated to the airline. The announcement came as part of a nationwide extended flight schedule for the airline through 2019.
Legislation To Extend Alcohol Sales Hours Passes State Senate
The California Senate has passed a bill that would allow alcohol to be served in Long Beach and a number of other California cities until 4 a.m. The legislation, Senate Bill 905, now goes to the state assembly. The bill would leave it up to the cities’ local governing bodies to determine how and where to implement the expanded serving time, which currently stops at 2 a.m. statewide. A newsletter sent out by 3rd District Councilmember Suzie Price today indicated that the new hours would apply only “in specific limited circumstances” in the downtown area, “and only in connection with a major special event.” She stated that she does not support the legislation due to concerns about the increased possibility for DUIs during early morning hours when many people are on their way to work.
California Migration Report Released
The residential real estate website Trulia released a report today stating that Las Vegas, New York and Phoenix are the top locations for people migrating out of California. The California Migration Report examined San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego, which had a combined average home price of $720,000 in March 2017 compared to the national average of $250,000. Other top cities for migrating Californians include Dallas, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago and Denver.
Wells Fargo Housing Foundation To Give $300,000 For Veterans’ Housing
The Wells Fargo Housing Foundation announced today that its annual VeteranWINS grant program will distribute $300,000 to nine nonprofits across the country that address sustainable housing for military veterans. VeteranWINS awarded five $40,000 grants to organizations in larger communities and four $25,000 grants for small to medium communities. Launched in 2016, VeteranWINS has donated a total of $600,000 in grants to support veterans’ housing programs.
Long Beach Marinas Recognized For Sustainable Practices
The Clean Marine program, a marine industry alliance promoting clean boat yard facilities, granted Long Beach’s Alamitos Bay Marina, Shoreline Marina and Rainbow Harbor Marina with a five-year recertification in recognition of their green operations. The program aims to protect coastal and inland waters from pollution. The marinas received the designation following on-site inspections and evaluations of waste management practices, environmental programs and clean-up practices. The City of Long Beach has been a Clean Marine member since 2006.
