The Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters just updated Election Day counts, including those for Long Beach’s 2nd District City Council race. Jeannine Pearce continues to hold a slight lead over Eric Gray. With 10,135 votes counted for the race, Pearce remains ahead by 225 votes: 5,180 to 4,955.

Now here’s the interesting part and why the 2nd District race is not final – according to Aaron Nevarez, an executive assistant in the registrar’s office, there are 178,000 ballots from Los Angeles County still to be processed. That’s not a typo. How many of those ballots impact the 2nd District race is impossible to tell, according to Nevarez.

But here’s what we do know: today, June 21, another 55,219 ballots were tallied countywide and the results posted. Of those ballots, 443 were for the 2nd District contest. A little math tells us that 443 equates to .008% of the total counted today. Applying that percentage to the 178,000 remaining ballots gives us a total of 1,424. So, that’s one scenario as to how many of the remaining ballots may apply to the 2nd District. Or it could be none. Who knows?

According to Nevarez, another count update occurs this Friday, June 24, and next week there will be counts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. By next Friday afternoon, July 1, the 2nd District winner should finally be confirmed.
