Port Of Long Beach Cargo Traffic Decreases Due To Shipping Alliance Changes, Tariffs

Total containerized cargo volumes moving through the Port of Long Beach decreased in August compared to the same month in 2017, the port announced today. This is the second consecutive month the port has experienced a dip in cargo traffic. Imports declined by 3.6%, but exports increased by 1.9%, according to the port. The shipment of empty containers overseas decreased by 1.1%. According to a port statement, overall container traffic has increased 9.4% through the first eight months of the year compared to the same period in 2017. “Our port’s decline in cargo over the last two months is in large part due to a realignment of ocean carrier alliance services and port calls,” Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero stated. “Another factor is higher tariffs by the United States and China. Thus far, that appears to have helped increase traffic, as shippers act to beat duties imposed on goods this summer.”

The index increased by 3.2% from July. Sales of manufactured goods increased in August, as did the number of persons employed in manufacturing, according to ISM, an international association serving supply management professionals. Although many business indicators were positive, survey respondents were increasingly concerned about escalating tariffs, according to Timothy Fiore, chair of the institute’s committee for its Manufacturing Business Survey.
