Committee To Discuss Measure A Spending

During its February 28 meeting, the Long Beach Transactions and Use Tax Citizens’ Advisory Committee is receiving an update on 2017 Measure A expenditures and revenues to determine if public safety and infrastructure projects were prioritized. Class Action Suit On Behalf Of Port Truck Drivers Imminent

Lawyers representing truck drivers who work in and around the San Pedro Bay ports are set to announce that they are launching a class action lawsuit against a “multi-national logistics company” on behalf of the drivers on Monday, February 26. Bush Gottlieb, a Law Corporation, and the Law Offices of C. Joe Saya, Jr. intend to argue that the truck drivers were misclassified as independent contractors, with the intention of ending systemic wage theft.

 

Supreme Court To Hear Arguments On Union Dues

The United States Supreme Court will begin hearing opening arguments in Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, Council 31, which could result in significant impacts to public-sector union employees. The issue at hand is whether to overturn Abood V. Detroit Board of Education, a 1977 case in which the court ruled that employees represented by a union must pay dues to that union whether or not they are enrolled as a member. The decision would affect five million public workers in 22 states, including California, according to the Center for Education Reform.

 

Long Beach Chamber Vice President Jeremy Harris Honored

The Western Association of Chamber Executives (WACE) has named Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Jeremy Harris as the recipient of its Gerald W. Hathaway Staff Person of the Year Award. The award recognizes a staff member who has designed new programs and systems that advanced the chamber’s development. WACE is the nation’s largest regional association of chamber of commerce executives.

 

Panel On Labor Unions And Workers’ Rights Tomorrow

A panel discussion on unions and workers’ rights is taking place tomorrow, February 24, 10 a.m. to noon, Rancho Los Cerritos, 4600 Virginia Rd. The panelists are Manuel Villanueva, the workplace justice organizer of the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Los Angeles; Jayne Howell, an anthropology professor and the co-director of the Latin American Studies department at California State University, Long Beach; and Kate Weidling, an education coordinator for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union.

 

CSULB Accounting Students Providing Free Tax Preparation

Accounting majors at California State University, Long Beach are providing free income tax preparation and filing of federal and state returns for students and community members through March 23. The program is available to taxpayers with an annual income of $54,000 or less who are not itemizing deductions. To receive services, clients must bring their government-issued photo identification, social security cards, wage and earnings statements and tuition fees and expenses form, if applicable.
